Peter Gilpin


Experience

 

  • With over 30 years’ experience in leisure management, Peter has run numerous leisure facilities, both public and private, in senior management positions.
  • As owner and Managing Director of Avalon Leisure, these included public leisure centres, pools, and private clubs across Somerset, Gloucestershire and Dorset.
  • Peter joined Leisure East Devon, later renamed LED Community Leisure, as CEO in 2010 and led the trust through a period of expansion and numerous awards until his retirement in 2024, becoming a Quest Assessor in 2025.
  • Peter was an early adopter of both Quest and Leisure NVQs, involved in developing the latter in the 1990s.
  • Prior to moving into leisure management, Peter was a secondary school PE teacher and swimming coach to Olympic level.

Interests

  • A competitive swimmer, Peter competes successfully in masters’ events as well as open water events – it helps as he lives on the coast!
  • A keen walker, with two labradors that don’t allow him a day off
  • He also enjoys travelling with his wife, Julie; recent trips have included the east coast of the USA and Canada, Croatia and South Africa
